NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR TO MATCH WITS
WITH AMATEUR SLEUTH ELLERY QUEEN DURING ELMIRA LITTLE THEATRE'S A VISIT
TO THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO
Roger Stern, author of the New York Times best-selling The
Death and Life of Superman and whose latest novel Superman:
The Never-Ending Battle is in stores now, will be the celebrity
jurist during the Saturday, April 1st, 2:00 pm matinee of Elmira Little
Theatre's A Visit to the Golden Age of Radio
in Mandeville Hall at the Clemens Center. Stern makes his appearance to
match wits with celebrated amateur detective Ellery Queen during The
Adventure of the Murdered Moths, one of the five radio program
recreated during this weekend's show. "This is going to be a lot
of fun," enthused director Gary Yoggy. "When Ellery Queen Mysteries
was originally broadcast on the radio, there was always a break in the
show right before the murderer was revealed to allow the audience a chance
to solve the mystery. There was always a celebrity jurist in the studio
to offer his or her solution to the mystery. They were almost always wrong.
It will be interesting to see if Roger Stern can get it right."
Roger Stern is no stranger to crime fiction. He has been a writer
in comic book industry for over thirty years, chronicling the adventures
of such crime fighters as Spider-Man, Superman, the Hulk, the Fantastic
Four, and many more. He is currently writing a Justice League of America
story arc that will see print in 2007. "I'm looking forward to
this," Stern admitted. "I often write stories about heroes
who catch criminals while wearing spandex tights. It will be a change
of pace to enter the world of a crime fighter who wears sweaters."
Prior to writing comic books and novels, Roger worked for a radio station
in Indiana. "In many ways, this is taking me back to my roots.
Radio is a medium of the imagination, and I love playing with people's
heads. When you get right down to it, it's what writers do."
Stern was invited to participate as a juror by fellow comic book writer
and local actor, Joe Edkin, who is the announcer for the Ellery
Queen Adventures episode. "Roger and I have been
friends for over twenty years. We've worked together on comic book projects
and in television," Edkin explained. "Roger has great presence.
He's smart. He's funny. And I look forward to him being wrong for a
change!"
Will
Edkin get his wish? The only way to find out is to attend the Saturday,
April 1st, 2:00 pm matinee of Elmira Little Theatre's A
Visit to the Golden Age of Radio. There will be two additional
performances of the show, Friday, March 31st, at 7:30pm and Saturday,
April 1st, at 7:30pm. All three performances will be in Mandeville Hall
at the Clemens Center. Stern will not be in attendance for the evening
performances, but announcer Joe Edkin will challenge audience members
to match wits with the maestro, Ellery Queen. Seating is limited. To
reserve tickets, call the Clemens Center Box Office at 607-734-8191.
